The route begins on the mountain’s south side and offers a direct approach to the summit. Due to its difficulty level, it is recommended for experienced trekkers who are physically fit and mentally prepared for the demanding climb.

Mountain Camps/ 8 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Umbwe Route

Camp comfortably in customized all-weather tents with upgraded zippers, flysheets, and closed-cell full-ground pads. Additionally, private toilet tents and solar-lit dining tents are provided daily. Moreover, the camp’s chef prepares hot meals from fresh ingredients. In the afternoons, hot drinks and snacks are provided.

Day by day highlights

 

Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

 

Our driver will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel for briefing. However, your guides will provide a detailed orientation and examine your gear. But, if you arrive midday or before, you will have time to explore Moshi, a chilled-out blend of African and Asian influences with a colorful market and a choice of coffee houses and bars. Finally, enjoy a delicious dinner and rest to prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Moshi to Umbwe Cave Camp

 

Your 8-day Kilimanjaro Trekking Umbwe Route adventure always starts with preparing all the equipment at the Hotel and then driving up to the Umbwe cave camp, where the real adventure will commence. After all the park registration regulation formalities, you will start Hiking up to the Umbwe cave camp, where you will spend the night.

Day 3: Umbwe cave camp to Baranco camp

 

On this day of your adventure, you will climb further through the moorland forest to reach the Baranco camp. There, you will enjoy a more incredible view of the Baranco Valley.

Time and distance: 4 to 5 hrs, which is a 6km distance

Elevation: 9,514 ft to 13,044 ft.

Day 4: Acclimatization at the Baranco camp

 

As one of the factors that increase the climbing success rate through the Umbwe route, you will have to spend this day at the Baranco camp. As altitude changes occur, adapting to them is necessary. Therefore, This day will be spent just taking some shots with your beautiful cameras and enjoying the incredible scenery of the groundsel-clad campsite. As this will be just a lazy spending day, if your body is active and good at acclimatization, you can opt for the six days via the Kilimanjaro Trekking Umbwe Route.

Day 6: Karanga camp to Barafu camp

 

After breakfast from the camp in the morning, you will leave Karanga and hit the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. After that, you continue the trekking up to the Barafu Hut. From there, you have completed the South Circuit. This point offers excellent views of the summit from many different angles. Here, we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Time and distance: 4 to 5 hrs, a 5km distance.

Then, elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft

What to see: Kibo Peak, the Western Breach, and the Southern Glaciers

Day 7: Summit and descend to Mweka camp

 

This is a dream come true, the actual day, and you will be leaving at midnight and passing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You will be heading northwesterly and ascending through a heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim, where you can stop and rest. But, from Stella Point, you may encounter snow on your 1-hour ascent to the summit at Uhuru Peak, and from there, you will meet a Congratulation spot that you have reached the highest peak in Africa. Therefore, You are on the list of the most successful people who have made it to the roof of Africa, and you will be certified for that. After the summit, you will take your way back, descending until you reach the Mweka camp.

Walking through: The crater rim

Accompaniments: Mountain guide/guides on the summit, then joining the chef and porters at Barafu on descending back.

Then, time and distance: The hike takes 5 to 7 hours ascending and 5 to 6 hours descending, covering a distance of 5km up and 13km down, respectively.

What to see: the incredible view at the Uhuru peak

Finally, the elevation: 15,350ft to 19,340ft up and 10,150ft down

Day 8: Mweka camp to Mweka gate then back to Moshi

 

This is the last day of your adventure to the roof of Africa. Then, You will have your morning breakfast at the camp and then continue descending to the Mweka gate, where you will meet  staff waiting to pick you up and take you back to Moshi. The descent at the lower elevation will be wet and muddy, hence the gaiters, which are highly recommended.

Day 9: Departure After breakfast
